CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Mortimer’s human form echoed the vision and concept Kels had of the dragon, at least before she had the misfortune of meeting her hero.

Mortimer adopted the guise of a proud old man with a flowing white beard trailing down to the ground. He was arrayed in flowing robes of midnight blue that had to be an illusion. The robes were etched with patterns of constellations from Earth that seemed to shift and move of their own accord. Pretty magic, but only an affectation. Like all dragons, Mortimer seemed to be all about appearances.

The dragon stepped out of the large groove in the ground where he had been resting. He seemed to glide across the floor rather than walk, and his eyes made a deliberate effort not to look directly at Kels or Mags, as though acknowledging them with a look might leave a stain.

Well, you have me now, let us move through to my study so I can transcribe whatever parts of your story may be of worth.

That the dragon continued to speak through telepathy instead of actual words was off-putting. It felt like another way in which he was trying to showcase his superiority. The way he spoke suggested he expected very little of the exchange.

Once again, Kels rallied herself, biting back her frustrations and personal feelings. As much as she wanted to give the pompous dragon a piece of her mind, he was their best hope for finding out what was happening in this world and how to save the dragons and creatures she had brought here.

“We found your journals detailing your creation of the portal staff back on Earth… feels like a lifetime ago now but it was really only a few—”

I said we would discuss this in my study. Mortimer’s imperious voice cut through Grey’s words, leaving everyone in another awkward silence as they followed the old dragon in his wizard-like guise.

As they went, Kels noticed Grey’s hand still joined with hers. Had it remained there the entire time? She squeezed a little and he squeezed back in turn. When she looked at him, she noticed a smug little smile on his face.

I like letting this ass know how important this ‘mere human’ is to me. He projected the words silently into her mind and Kels found her frustration with Mortimer easing to see how fully Grey was on her side.

The silent walk through Mortimer’s cave was weird. Even Crowl seemed to feel it, and Kels noticed him giving Mags apologetic and worried looks of his own whenever she regarded him. Now and then, the odd looks Mags gave the other gray suggested they were having some secret psychic communion.

Here we are, Mortimer announced. None of you say a word until I have my journal and pen ready. I do not care to have my air polluted by human drivel any more than is necessary.

Kels took a sharp breath, eyes narrowing as she stared daggers at the dragon she had once held in such high esteem.
